Monday — Bev
Fifteen years. A wife, a mom to two young boys, and quiet about all of it — you would never have known she was sick, even after she lost her hair. She hated wigs, said they itched, so she wore hats and looked perfect in them.
Round after round of chemotherapy, a few cancer-free months at a time, and a doctor who told her not to worry for a single moment because he already had plan B, C, D and E lined up. He fought beside her until her body couldn’t anymore. Nominated by Michele, her former daughter-in-law — which tells you everything.
Tuesday — Michele
Michele was 46 when her doctor felt a small lump during a routine annual visit. Two previous mammograms had shown nothing but dense tissue. “Calling me dense! Rude!”
Her doctor said it was probably nothing — she was his healthiest patient, she’d just hiked Mount Kilimanjaro — but please get it checked. It was breast cancer. Caught at a very early stage, a tumor only 7mm across.
Lumpectomy, no chemo, four weeks of radiation, and five years on an estrogen blocker that she finished last December. No family history. No genetic markers. Her advice: get checked, follow your doctor’s recommendations, and advocate for yourself.
Wednesday — Paula
Paula nominated herself, and she earned it. Diagnosed in July 2024 with cancer that had three different names. First chemo infusion that September, last one in January. Immunotherapy every three weeks since.
On September 17 of this year, she was told she is cancer free. And on October 2, she walked into the cancer center with about twelve family members and friends and rang that bell three times.
“I kept the faith and am now cancer free. I am really CANCER FREE!”
Thursday — Lynda
Lynda has come through two cancer scares — one in her right breast, one in her left ovary. Both caught clean, both removed, neither needing heavy treatment.
And after losing an ovary, she went on to give birth to a baby boy. She says she’s grateful every single day that she’s still here to watch her children, and now her grandchildren, grow up.
Friday — Deb
Deb was nominated by Marla, who put it this way: Deb talked openly on the air about her mammogram, her colonoscopy, all of it. She did the testing, she paid attention to her health, and she encouraged everyone listening to do the same — and she made it less scary and more normal. She never gives up on her health.
Saturday — Shirley
Nominated by her daughter. Her story is coming.
Sunday — Nana Kathy
Kathy’s daughter Sierra is a distance runner. When her mom was diagnosed, Sierra was about to run 50 miles through the desert near Bryce Canyon — and somewhere in the middle of that race she found herself sobbing about it, wondering what her family had done to deserve a second round of this.
Her mom, meanwhile, took on the appointments, the hair loss, the medications and the mastectomy recovery and came out the other side as the most positive version of herself.
“She completed the ultra marathon that no one willingly signs up for.”
Today she gets to be Nana Kathy to Sierra’s three-year-old son, and the two of them are each other’s favorite people. Sierra is running 31 this month for her mom.
