Run 31, Day 19: Run for Bev

Day 19 belongs to Bev — fifteen years of fighting breast cancer, and most people never knew.

“You would never have known she had cancer or was sick, even when she lost her hair. She looked perfect in her hats.”

— Michele, who nominated her

Listen to Bev’s dedication

Who she was

Courageous. Caring. Strong. Funny. Quiet and soft-spoken. A fighter.

A wife, and a mom to two young boys.

And for fifteen years, someone living with breast cancer — though you would never have guessed it from looking at her. Not even after the chemotherapy took her hair. She tried wigs and hated them, said they itched too much. So she wore hats instead, and she made them look like a choice rather than a consequence.

Fifteen years

Round after round of chemotherapy. And in between, stretches where she was cancer free — a few months at a time. Then it would come back.

Eventually it spread to her back and into her spine. And finally to her brain.

The doctor who wouldn’t let her carry the fear alone

Through all of it, Bev had a doctor who was incredibly supportive — and who gave her something most patients never get.

He told her that if a treatment stopped working, she shouldn’t worry for a single moment. He already had plan B. And plan C. And D. And E. All of them lined up and waiting.

He fought right alongside her, until her body just couldn’t fight anymore.

Bev, today we run for you

Bev was nominated by Michele, her former daughter-in-law. Which tells you something about Bev.

Marriages end. But some people get into your heart and simply stay there — years later, still worth saying out loud. Nineteen miles down, and this one is yours.

Run for them. Get screened for you.
