Day 21 of Run 31, and today’s mile belongs to Paula – who rang the bell at the cancer center earlier this month, with twelve people standing there watching her do it.
“I kicked cancer’s butt! I kept the faith and I am now cancer free.”

Paula nominated herself
Most of the names on our list this month came from somebody else – a daughter, a friend, a coworker who wanted us to know about someone. Paula put her own name in. And when you read what she sent us, you understand why she wasn’t waiting around for anybody else to tell it.
She was diagnosed in July 2024. Three different names for what she was dealing with. Her first chemo infusion was September 18, 2024. Her last one was in January 2025.
The part in the middle nobody talks about
Chemo ended, and there were still signs of cancer.
That’s the stretch of this story worth sitting with. She’d done the hard part – the infusions, the months of it – and it wasn’t over. She moved on to immunotherapy infusions every three weeks and kept going. And she prayed, every day, to hear one specific sentence.
“Prayed daily to become cancer free. Had the faith from the beginning.”
On September 17, 2026 – a little over two years after her diagnosis – she was told she’s cancer free.
She rang that bell three times
On October 2, Paula went back to the cancer center with about twelve members of her family and friends. And she rang the bell. Three times.
“I rang that bell three times to finalize the fact that God walked with me and took all signs of any cancer away. I am really cancer free!”
She’ll stay on immunotherapy infusions for another year or two. That’s what cancer free looks like for a lot of people – not a finish line, but a different kind of appointment on the calendar. She’s doing it with the same faith she started with.
Paula, today we run for you. Twenty days after you rang that bell, a whole lot of Whatcom County is out here celebrating with you.
Run for them. Get screened for you.
