OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A new law in Washington is giving protection to citizens that rescue pets and vulnerable people from hot cars.

Gov. Bob Ferguson signed HB 1046 into law on Wednesday, April 30 that allows a person to damage a vehicle in order to save a life.

The new law requires people to make steps before attempting to break into the car, such as calling 911 and minimizing damage to the vehicle when breaking in.

Gov. Ferguson says this bill is an important one.

“Overheating cars, as we all know, is an important danger to keep in mind as the summer approaches, which it most certainly is,” he said. “So, this legislature can most certainly save lives.”

The governor signed the bill during a slew of signings Wednesday morning, passing a variety of bills into law.
