Karissa was 30 weeks pregnant when she found out she had breast cancer.
She’s in her mid-thirties. She’s a mom of two. And when we talked with her this morning, she was three weeks post-surgery from a double mastectomy.
Three weeks. She got on the phone with us three weeks out, and she was remarkable.
“Just because I’m sick doesn’t mean we can’t be grateful.”
— Karissa, on the lesson she’s teaching her kiddos (and all of us TBH)
Hear Karissa tell it herself
There’s no summary that does this justice. Give her a few minutes.
You’re never too young to pay attention
Routine screening guidelines start later than Karissa’s age, and that’s exactly why her story matters. Know what’s normal for your body, and if something changes, don’t wait and don’t talk yourself out of it. Push to be taken seriously.
And if you have a family history, tell your doctor — it can change when you should start screening.
Miss one?
Every dedication lands on our In Case You Missed It page, and the full schedule is at KAFE.com.
Come move a mile with us
We’re going all month. Run it, walk it, crawl it — treadmill, trail, a lap around the block with the dog. Any pace, any time of day. One mile is one mile, and it’s never too late to start.
Log your miles in the Run 31 Strava group, share them with #KAFERuns31, or text a photo to 360.676.5233. We love seeing them.
Run for them. Get screened for you.
