Day 15 belongs to Rosalee — who is three weeks into this, scheduled for surgery, and already asking harder questions than most of us ever do.
“If I share my story and even one person goes and gets a mammogram, that’s the goal.”
— Rosalee
Listen to our conversation with Rosalee
How it happened
Rosalee went in for her regular mammogram. Then an ultrasound. Then a biopsy.
And on September 24, she opened MyChart and read the word carcinoma on a screen, by herself.
Her lumpectomy is scheduled for early November. The whole thing moved fast, which is the point — she caught it because she kept the appointment.
The first week was the hardest
Rosalee describes herself as a bit of a Chicken Little. She runs anxious. So when we asked her honestly how she was doing, she didn’t dress it up.
That first week she was scared. Anxious. In mourning. And — this is the part that stopped us — ashamed.
Then she did the thing that changed it. She reached out to her community. And her whole outlook shifted: staying positive, grateful it was caught early, putting good energy out into the universe.
Let’s talk about the shame
Rosalee is still unpacking where that feeling came from. She didn’t do anything wrong. Nobody does. And yet shame showed up anyway, uninvited, in the first week.
We talked about the definitions we hand ourselves — the healthy one, the strong one, the one who handles things — and how a diagnosis makes you redefine a few of them whether you’re ready or not.
If you’re carrying that same feeling right now, Rosalee’s conversation is worth your time. You’re not the only one.
A private person, on the radio
Here’s what makes this one count. Rosalee is a private person. Telling a few hundred thousand people about her biopsy results is not her natural setting.
She did it anyway, for one reason: if one listener books the mammogram they’ve been putting off, it was worth it. So go book it. Her story just did its job.
