Monday’s mile belonged to Dawn, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer three times and is still here telling people not to give up.
“This is only going to make you stronger. You open your mind when this happens, you open up to the opportunities that cancer gave you. A voice to speak about it, because you’re going to live through it.”
— Dawn
Listen to our conversation with Dawn
It’s twelve minutes, and it’s worth every one of them.
Three times
Dawn was 31 when she was first diagnosed. Chemotherapy, losing her hair, all of it — and then the all clear.
Five years later, it came back. She fought it and beat it a second time.
Then a third.
She lost her hair more than once. She never lost her spirit, and she never lost that attitude. Anyone who’s spent five minutes with Dawn knows exactly what we mean.
And then she went to work
Dawn works at a community cancer center. Which means that after everything she went through, she chose to spend her days in the building where other people are going through it — handing out the same positivity to anyone who walks in.
Her friend nominated her as “the most kick butt breast cancer survivor, who selflessly helps others going through this as well,” and after talking with her, we’d say that undersells it a little.
Her message to anyone in the fight right now is as simple as it gets: never give up.
Dawn, today we run for you
Thank you for three rounds of this and a voice that never went quiet. Twelve miles down, and this one’s yours.
