Day 10 belongs to Tara — an oncology nurse, a mastectomy patient, and is in the running for the best quote we’ve heard on this segment.
“You’re not flat like a road. You’re flat like an offroad.”
— Tara
Listen to Tara’s story
No family history. Caught it anyway.
Tara had no family history of breast cancer. What she had was a regular screening mammogram on the calendar — and that’s what found it.
Because it was caught so early, and because she’s an oncology nurse who knew exactly what was coming, Tara says the whole thing “wasn’t a big deal.” Think about that sentence for a second. Breast cancer, not a big deal, because of a routine appointment she didn’t skip.
She had a mastectomy. Today she is cancer free.
The part we did not see coming
Tara told us that more than 60% of women choose not to have reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy.
Then she reached into her bra and pulled out her custom 3D printed prosthetic. On the air. In the studio. We have never experienced anything like it.
It was remarkable. The back of it isn’t flat like a traditional bra insert — it’s contoured like a puzzle piece, shaped to fit her chest exactly. Tara has become a genuine advocate for these, and she walked our listeners through the whole experience of getting one.
If you’ve had a mastectomy, or you love someone who has, this is the conversation worth sending them.
What Tara wants you to know
Get the screening. No family history doesn’t mean no risk — and early is what turns a crisis into a plan.
And after, there are more options than you’ve been told about. Ask about them. Tara is living proof you can come through this flat like an offroad and laughing about it.
Tara, today we run for you. Thank you for the joy, the honesty, and the show-and-tell.
Run for them. Get screened for you.
