Winter Pests You Can’t See but Shouldn’t Ignore: What Hides in Your Crawl Space and Attic

Winter in Whatcom County often brings more than cold air and steady rain. As temperatures drop and moisture rises, pest control experts say many homeowners may unknowingly share their homes with unwanted winter guests hiding in crawl spaces and attics.

Rodents, spiders, insects and other pests commonly move indoors seeking warmth and shelter. According to Bio Bug, a longtime local pest control company serving Whatcom County, many infestations go unnoticed through the winter because pests settle in less-traveled parts of the home.

“Just like humans, pests need food and harborage all year round.  Often rodents and other pests infest hidden areas of the home and go undetected.  If undetected pests are not controlled, it can result in big bills for homeowners to replace or repair insulation, wiring and plumbing.  Bio Bug Pest Management does free inspections of crawlspaces, attics and exteriors of structures to identify any pest issues in structures.”

Rodents often cause some of the most serious winter damage, chewing insulation, wires and stored belongings. Pest professionals warn that droppings can also pose health concerns for homeowners. Moisture-loving insects, including ants and spiders, may also establish colonies in damp areas beneath homes, especially during long periods of rain.

Experts recommend homeowners watch for scratching sounds in walls, droppings, unusual odors, damaged insulation or chewed materials. Sealing entry points, reducing moisture and scheduling inspections can help prevent costly repairs and protect home health.

Bio Bug says early detection is key. Addressing hidden winter pests now can prevent larger infestations as weather warms in the spring.
