SPOKANE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A wildfire in Spokane has prompted evacuation orders for residents.

Currently, the Upriver Fire is burning around 217 acres in the Beacon Hill area. That is down from a previous count from Deputy Fire Marshal Amy Thornton at roughly 300 acres late Tuesday. Additionally, the fire threatens roughly 500 homes, power lines, water supply and additional infrastructure.

The Associated Press reports at least 15 homes have already burned but officials have yet to fully assess the damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

While crews battle the fire, a Level 3 “Go Now” order in in place for parts of the neighborhood on the north side of the Spokane River.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said that the remains of a person were found inside a home destroyed by the fire.

FEMA has authorized the use of federal funds to assist in fighting this fire, according to an announcement made Wednesday, June 17. The money will come through the Fire Management Assistance Grant program.

A little closer to our neck of the woods, two small wildfires were burning on the banks of Omak Lake. They have since merged, burning at 7,500 acres total. A Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation order is also in effect for all of Kartar.

According to Kartar Fire spokesperson Bethany Osgood, everyone has been evacuated from the area, and they are requesting no drones or other items be flown over the affected area at this time. Details on what roads are closed will be posted to the Okanogan County Emergency Management (OCEM)’s website.

Further south, the Tule Fire is currently burning over 24,000 acres south of Toppenish. That fire forced a temporary closure of US 97 on Monday, June 15 and is 15% contained.
