WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Funding issues are forcing the county to reduce its road maintenance services this winter.

Whatcom County Public Works says it’s planning to scale back its service levels to align its work with the funding that’s available.

The department says it will prioritize emergency response and work to keep key routes open in the event of flooding, snow and ice.

“With fewer staff on the road, we are asking for your help as our eyes and ears. If you see something dangerous, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we can ensure everyone can travel safely through our community,” said Public Works Director Elizabeth Kosa.

Whatcom County Council recently approved a levy increase to prevent further service reductions and layoffs within the department.

But Public Works warns the impacts could be more pronounced starting next year, including longer turnaround times for routine work and slower pothole and shoulder repairs.

As the available funding is redirected towards essential work and safety needs, some capital projects could be delayed or paced more slowly.

Fewer staff will be on the roads this winter, so the public is being encouraged to contact Public Works staff if they see something dangerous.
