WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Frozen shrimp in nine states, including Washington, are off the menu over concerns of radioactive contamination.
Whatcom County Health and Community Services says California-based Southwind Foods is recalling several brands of its bagged frozen shrimp.
The product was sold between July 17 and Aug. 8 under the brand names Sand Bar, Best Yet, Arctic Shores, Great American and First Street.
The FDA reports that it detected a radioactive isotope, Cesium-137, in a single shipment of imported frozen shrimp from an Indonesian company.
The agency is investigating the case, but says no products that entered the U.S. have tested positive for it and no sicknesses have been reported yet.
Anyone who bought the recalled product is still urged to throw it away immediately, as prolonged exposure to C-137 can increase the risk of cancer.
