WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Warming temperatures may tempt folks to take a dip in one of our region’s lakes or rivers. But Whatcom County Health and Community Services is advising caution before diving in.

They’re recommending people who want to dip their feet in the water to check for swim warnings or closures before they head out the door.

Folks should also be mindful of what the water looks like before they go in—very cloudy water or areas near pipes should be avoided.

Many of our region’s bodies of water are susceptible to varying levels of bacteria, like E. coli, which can rapidly shut down swimming spots. That can manifest in the form of an algal bloom, or an excessive growth of algae on a water’s surface, which is harmful for both humans and animals.

Health and Community Services also recommends people wash their hands thoroughly after a swim, especially if they got their hands in sand.
