WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Setting off fireworks could soon see some stricter regulations in Whatcom County.

A draft ordinance regarding fireworks regulations will be discussed at the County Council’s regular meeting Tuesday, June 9.

If approved, the permitting process for public fireworks displays will require a state license and a permit application submitted to the Whatcom County Fire Marshal.

Fireworks discharge times for the Fourth of July holiday would also be scaled back. The ordinance would only allow fireworks to be set off on July 4 between 6 p.m. and midnight, compared to current regulations that also allow fireworks on July 3 and 5.

Cities and tribes that set their own rules for fireworks sales and use will not need to abide by the ordinance, as it only applies to unincorporated Whatcom County.

Seasonal burn ban in Whatcom County looms

This comes as Whatcom County’s stage 1 burn ban is on the horizon.

Open burning in unincorporated parts of the county will not be allowed starting next Monday, June 15.

During the burn ban, land clearing and yard debris fires are not allowed. Recreational fires are still permitted, but they must adhere to several safety guidelines.

Residents of Lummi Island, Sandy Point or Point Roberts fire districts should contact their respective departments for guidelines on outdoor burning.

The burn ban is expected to remain in place through September 15, but the date could be extended depending on the weather.
