SEATTLE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Crew members for Washington’s ferry system are sounding the alarm about burnout.
Washington State Ferry (WSF) engineers discussed crew burnout at a press conference on Colman Dock Wednesday, June 17, where engineers brought their concerns to the attention of Governor Bob Ferguson.
Ferguson was asked to address a growing wage gap between deck and engine crew, causing burnout and affecting crew morale.
Union representative Eric Winge predicted further ferry delays and missed sailings if the wage gap isn’t closed. WSF crews have also failed to manage to staff 20 vessels ahead of the World Cup, something state officials had promised.
In a June 2026 survey released by the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, more than 60% of WSF engine crew said they were somewhat or very likely to retire or leave WSF for another job.
When asked about closing the wage gap, 72% of engineers said it would help retain crew members.
