OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Android phone users in Washington can soon claim a slice of settlement money.

State Attorney General Nick Brown’s office says that a federal court approved a $700 million settlement as part of a multi-state lawsuit against Google.

The case, filed in 2021, accused Google of holding a monopoly over apps distributed across Android phones and devices. Brown and others also claimed Google charged consumers up to 30% more for certain apps if they were purchased through their Google Play Store.

Roughly $13 million of the settlement total will be distributed between 2.4 million residents in Washington. As part of the agreement, Google is required to give Android users options outside of the Play Store to purchase and download apps for at least 7 years.

The office notes that most of those entitled to funds will have their payments delivered directly via e-pay services PayPal or Venmo.
