Lynden Police Chief Steve Taylor says that the child’s mother reported the alleged assaults to authorities on Sunday.

She told investigators that her 12-year-old child told her that she was involved in a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old.

During the investigation, the victim also mentioned being sexually assaulted by an adult family member on multiple occasions.

Police arrested 18-year-old Angel Sanchez and 21-year-old Celso Ramirez Lopez in connection to the alleged rapes on Sunday.

Both men have since been released from the Whatcom County Jail.
