BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – As Washingtonians and people around the world mourn the loss of Dolly Parton, the Whatcom Humane Society Thrift Shop is honoring her love of reading.
The shop is offering one free book per person through Saturday, Aug. 29, with a wide selection available for all ages.
It’s open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Park Manor Shopping Center on Birchwood Avenue.
This comes as Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal pushes for Parton’s philanthropic book project to continue to receive funding in the state.
Funding for the Imagination Library of Washington was left out of the state’s 2025-27 operating budget.
Reykdal is urging Governor Bob Ferguson and lawmakers to restore funding so children can continue receiving free books each month through the program. The superintendent met Parton in 2023 after the Imagination Library expanded throughout the state.
