Big news for local baseball fans.

The Bellingham Bells announced today that they’ll be hosting the West Coast League’s 2024 All-Star Game.

The two-day event will take place on July 16 and 17 to showcase the best players across all 16 WCL teams.

It will include a community adaptive baseball game, a player pro-style workout featuring MLB scouts and a skills challenge featuring some of the All-Stars.

The game itself will be played on July 17 at Joe Martin Field.

Tickets go on sale April 1.

 

The Western Washington University Track and Field team had a stellar showing yesterday.

They swept the team titles at the GNAC Indoor Championships for the first time in program history.

The Vikings hit three school records and 10 NCAA provisional qualifying marks over the two-day event.

26 of their athletes earned All-GNAC honors for either placing in the top three individually or being part of a winning relay team.

It was highlighted by junior Kevin McDermott, who won the men’s mile, 3000 meter and 5000 meter races.

The Vikings now hold all three GNAC team trophies after also winning the outdoor and cross country championships in 2023.

 

Meanwhile, the WWU softball team is hitting a key stretch this weekend.

The 16th nationally ranked Vikings are traveling to Saints Field in Lacey to take on Saint Martin’s and Western Oregon in a pair of doubleheaders.

Western is looking to continue its perfect 11-0 start to the season.

They’re hitting over .300 as a team and have a staff ERA of 1.88 through those 11 games.

The Vikings are one of just 10 undefeated teams left in NCAA Division II.

 

And a local hockey game over the weekend featured a unique twist. 

A resident named Kyle Sorenson paid $700 to host an “Oops! All Goalies” scrimmage last Saturday at the Bellingham Sportsplex.

The five-on-five match lasted for two hours with all players in full goalie gear.

Sorenson hopes that the game will turn into an annual, or even bi-annual, event.
