SKAGIT COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A nearby tribe is getting some big bucks to revitalize its piers and waterfront facilities.

U.S. Representative Rick Larsen’s office announced on Monday that the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community is set to receive nearly $11 million in federal grant dollars.

The tribe will use the funds to construct a new commercial pier and covered storage, renovate three moorage piers and design a new fish processing plant.

“This funding is fantastic news for Northwest Washington ports,” said Rep. Larsen. “The Port of Everett and Swinomish Indian Tribal Community will put these dollars to good use constructing and modernizing piers for commercial fishing and cargo operations. These ports are cornerstones of the local economy and these funds will allow them to expand their regional and global reach. I am glad to have been able to play a role in advocating for these funds, and I will keep working to bring home federal dollars to upgrade port infrastructure and create jobs in Northwest Washington.”

According to Larsen’s office, the Port of Swinomish cannot currently consolidate its fishing fleet in one location, nor store fishing equipment.

The dollars come after an $11 million grant kicked off the project, funding the first design portion in fiscal year 2022.

The new round of funding is part of the Port Infrastructure Development Program, which also funded the project in the first place.

The Port of Everett received over $11 million as part of this grant funding, totaling $22 million for the region.
