BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A fizzy mess caused a major backup on I-5 in Bellingham.

The Washington State Department of Transportation says a load of soda cans spilled along northbound I-5 near Iowa Street in Bellingham at around 6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The right lane was closed for about 45 minutes while crews cleaned up the mess.

Workers were seen kicking the cans off the interstate before a street sweeper was brought in to do most of the heavy lifting.

The incident caused backups as far south as Samish Way and traffic did not start flowing again until 7:30 a.m.
