SKAGIT COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Skagit County is in the midst of historic flooding.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the Skagit River Basin through late Friday night due to potential levee and dam failures.

That includes parts of Mount Vernon, Burlington, La Conner, Edison, Conway and Stanwood. Forecasters say extensive flooding of streets, homes and farmland will be possible.

The Skagit River near Concrete has reached record levels, having surpassed 41 ft as of Thursday morning, but is expected to have reached or neared its crest while still at major flooding.

The river near Mount Vernon has reached major flooding and crested at a record level of 37.73 ft around midnight Thursday into Friday. This falls just below the predicted crest of 39 ft at 10 a.m. on Friday.

You can find the latest river forecasts on Skagit County’s website.

Meanwhile, troops are on the way to flooded areas across our state. The Washington National Guard says that over 200 Guardsmen were briefed early on Thursday on their assignments in some of the hardest hit areas.

Video posted to social media show Guardsmen filling sandbags that will be used throughout Skagit County. Their deployment came as a result of Gov. Bob Ferguson declaring a statewide emergency on Wednesday.
