Skagit County declares emergency over major flooding headed for Mount Vernon and Concrete

SKAGIT COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Skagit County is bracing itself for what’s expected to be extensive flooding in the coming days.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a flood warning for the county until further notice as Concrete and Mount Vernon are both forecast to have major flooding for multiple days this week.

According to the NWS, the Skagit River near Mount Vernon is predicted to rise above the major flood stage early Thursday morning through late Friday night, peaking at nearly 37 ft. early on Friday morning.

The river near Concrete is expected to surpass the major flood stage from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening, peaking at 40 ft. around 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Skagit County commissioners approved an emergency declaration on Monday, Dec. 8 to quickly mobilize its resources for the flood response.

In Whatcom County, the Nooksack River at Ferndale is expected to see the most flooding when it crests around 20 ft. on Thursday afternoon, which puts it just below the moderate flood stage.
