SUMAS, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A pair of rescues took place in Sumas this week amid major flooding.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the flood forced four people into their attic on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Local firefighters weren’t able to reach them due to 8- to 10-foot-deep water that was surrounding the home.

A Coast Guard air crew from Port Angeles arrived and sent a rescue swimmer to the roof of a porch and helped the people through an attic window. The crew hoisted two people and brought them to a landing zone.

Another air crew from Astoria, OR arrived shortly after to hoist the two remaining survivors from the rooftop and bring them to emergency services. No one was reported injured.

Meanwhile, members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection rescued a truck driver that was stuck in floodwaters.

CBP says an air crew from Bellingham spotted a tractor-trailer that was trapped in 5 feet of rushing water early on Thursday morning.

A ground team perched atop a tractor helped bring the driver to safety.
