WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – As the flood recovery process gets underway, state and local officials are warning residents be careful when hiring professional help.

The state Department of Labor and Industries is recommending residents use its tools to weed out any shady contractors.

L&I’s website ProtectMyHome.net gives people a way to verify that a contractor is registered and has liability insurance and a business license.

It also confirms whether a contractor has posted a bond, which could offer some financial protection if needed.

Whatcom Ready recommends that people use personal references, check online reviews and get everything in a written contract before hiring someone.

L&I is encouraging residents to report any fraudulent or unregistered contractors on its website. Report a fraudulent or unregistered contractor at Lni.wa.gov/ReportAContractor or call 1-888-811-5974.
