LYNDEN, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Planned upgrades to a pair of Whatcom County border crossing stations appear to be in limbo.

Senator Patty Murray and Rep. Rick Larsen released a joint statement on Thursday, Oct. 15, saying that they requested a response from the General Services Administration regarding the issue back in September.

My Bellingham Now previously reported on the GSA’s announcement to move forward with modernizing the Lynden and Sumas border crossings in January 2025. But this past August, the GSA announced they placed nine planned border crossing upgrades on hold, including the Lynden and Sumas projects. Congress already set aside funding for 26 total upgrades to move forward as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure law, passed in 2021.

In their letter, Senator Murray and Rep. Larsen state that any delay in modernizing the two Whatcom County crossings will have a ripple effect on the nation’s supply chain. Both crossings were built in the late 1980s and are in need of upgrades to expand their processing capacity and cut down on wait times.
