BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The City of Bellingham has reached an agreement to tighten emission controls at its sewage treatment plant.

Bellingham City Council voted unanimously on Monday, Nov. 17 to allow Mayor Kim Lund to enter into a settlement agreement resolving several violations alleged by the Northwest Clean Air Agency.

The agency issued a notice of three violations against the city’s Post Point Wastewater Treatment Plant in March 2024 over missing permits and noncompliance with emission regulations

The city responded by denying any wrongdoing.

The newly signed agreement requires the city to install more air pollution controls and carbon monoxide monitors to ensure both of Post Point’s incinerators meet emission limits. It also states that the settlement is neither a ruling on the alleged violations nor an admission of guilt on the city’s part.

The agreement was signed by Mayor Kim Lund on Tuesday, Nov. 18 and the changes are expected to be made over the next five years.
