BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Whatcom County has an ample supply of industrial land available, but there may be some challenges in meeting future growth.

That’s according to a new, first-of-its-kind study released by the Port of Bellingham that looks at how industrial land is being used across the county and whether it’s sustainable for economic expansion.

It found that there’s nearly 3,400 acres of developable land left in Whatcom County that’s currently zoned for industrial use, which meets targets for future job growth.

But the study, produced by consulting group Maul Foster Alongi, noted several barriers that reduce that supply by nearly 1,000 acres.

Much of the existing land lacks proper access to transportation connections and key utilities like water, sewer and power, among other restraints.

The study recommends the county expand wetland mitigation options, improve infrastructure for truck corridors and install more consistency in zoning regulations to support long-term development.

“As the Associate Development Organization for Whatcom County, the Port is focused on supporting the retention and expansion of living-wage jobs,” said Port Economic Development Director Tyler Schroeder. “This study is about helping businesses thrive by making sure we have the right tools and space in place to meet the demands of a changing economy.”

The findings come as the county and its cities work to finalize their 2025 Comprehensive Plan updates.
