BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Whatcom County residents were granted special access for one day only to explore and learn about the Bellingham waterfront.

With a rich commercial fishing, cargo and maritime heritage, the Bellingham waterfront is the office to hundreds of people every day. Sustainable Connections, a non-profit based in Bellingham, brought together regional businesses and public entities to debut the first annual “Day on the Bay” on Sept. 28.

Hundreds of people walked along the Bellingham waterfront to board ships, taste locally caught cod, explore the Bellingham Shipping Terminal and meet members of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Maressa Valliant, Director of Eat Local First, explained why Day on the Bay was created and hosted on the final weekend of September.

“This [week] is seafood week. We wanted to expand it and bring exciting activities for Whatcom County residents,” Valliant said. “Next weekend is SeaFeast and this event also supports that event.”

According to Valliant, October is National Seafood Month. To celebrate, Bellingham SeaFeast will be held next weekend at Zuanich Point Park and will feature locally sourced seafood, live music and more.

Plans are already in motion for next year’s Day on the Bay, with the tentative day being the final Saturday in Sept. 2025.
