SUMAS, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – If you want to participate in a meeting related to the proposed quarry mine in Sumas, here’s your chance.
An online public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13 to discuss the Ranch Quarry’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
The meeting will focus on the scoping phase of the EIS, allowing members of the public to hear about the proposed project, the vetting process and how those interested can offer their input.
My Bellingham Now previously reported on the county’s decision to evaluate the proposal for the 64-acre open-pit rock quarry near the intersection of South Pass and Frost roads.
EIS for projects of this scale are common, and they evaluate the ramifications of the construction project as well as what the project means for the greater area after completion. The currently forested site would need an estimated 65 acres for trees removed for the proposed scope of the quarry mine.
The online meeting is from 6 to 8 p.m. and requires prior registration. The meeting itself will have a formal comment period available for attendants after the presentation and Q-and-A session with officials.
If you are unable to participate in the public comment period, Whatcom County is still receiving written, emailed and online comments on their website through May 29.
