Kraken News

The Kraken couldn’t get the job done in the final game of their homestand last night.

Seattle fell to the San Jose Sharks 6-1.

Ryan Winterton scored near the end of the first period to tie the game, but the Sharks responded with five unanswered goals to take the win.

The Kraken now head off for a brief two-game road trip, starting in St. Louis on Saturday against the Blues.

PWHL News

In professional women’s hockey, a pair of Pacific Northwest teams have finally unveiled their new names.

Seattle’s new PWHL team will be named the Torrent, drawing from Washington’s powerful rivers and cascading waterways.

Vancouver’s new team will be called the Goldeneyes, inspired by the bird common to northern climates, including British Columbia.

Each franchise also unveiled their brand new logos to go along with the names.

The two teams will compete on opening day, with Seattle playing at Vancouver on Nov. 21.

HS Volleyball News

We had a few district champions crowned in Whatcom County last night.

Lynden swept Sehome in three sets to earn the 2A district volleyball title and continue their undefeated season. Both teams are still headed to the state tournament, which begins next Friday.

In 1A, Meridian is facing Nooksack Valley in the consolation bracket finale tonight with a ticket to state on the line. The winner will join Lynden Christian, who won the district championship on Tuesday against the Pioneers.

Nooksack will have a second chance tonight when they face the Trojans, they start at 7:30 from Meridian High School.

HS Girls Soccer News

Over in girls soccer, Sehome beat Anacortes 4-3 to secure the 2A district title. Both teams are already headed to state, which starts next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Lynden edged Bellingham 3-2 in PKs to advance to the district crossover, where they’ll face Selah on Saturday with a state tournament berth on the line.

In Class 1A, Lynden Christian blanked Nooksack Valley 1-0 to take home the district crown. The Pioneers will have a second stab at state on Saturday when they play Blaine in a win-or-go-home match.

HS Football News

The latest round of high school football rankings are out ahead of the Week 10 play-in round.

Lynden stayed up at No. 6 in Class 2A, with Anacortes just ahead at No. 5 in the latest AP poll from a state panel of sportwriters. Sehome dropped out of the rankings, receiving the 12th most votes after losing to top-ranked Archbishop Murphy.

In Class 1A Mount Baker moved up to No. 3 in the state and Lynden Christian stayed right behind at No. 4 following their win over Nooksack Valley. The Pioneers barely dropped out of the rankings after receiving the 11th most votes.

We’ll have all those schools on the radio for you this weekend as they each fight for a spot in the state tournament in the second year of the newly-established play-in round.

NFL News

If you want to quench your thirst for football before then, we’ve got Thursday Night Football on the air for you. The Denver Broncos are hosting the Las Vegas Raiders in a matchup of AFC West rivals.

Things haven’t gone the way Pete Carroll and the Raiders had hoped, getting off to a 2-6 start in his first year at the helm. Geno Smith still leads the league in interceptions with 11 of them in his first season away from the Seahawks.

Meanwhile, the Broncos have won six straight and are tied for the best record in the NFL at 7-2. They’ll look to further their division lead tonight in the Mile-High City.

Coverage begins at 4:30 and kickoff is at 5:15 on KPUG.
