Mariners News

The Mariners are officially playoff-bound.

They edged the Colorado Rockies 4-3 last night thanks to a go-ahead, bases-clearing double by Josh Naylor in the bottom of the eighth. Dom Canzone homered and the M’s bullpen threw just over three scoreless innings to give them their 15th win in 16 games.

With the Yankees’ walkoff win over the White Sox just hours before, the Mariners have now secured a postseason berth. They have a chance to do one better tonight, when a win over the Rockies and a Houston Astros loss to the Athletics would give them their first AL West title since 2001.

Luis Castillo is on the mound as Seattle looks to win their sixth-straight game. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.

Meanwhile, the team gave an injury update for their All-Star starting pitcher.

Mariners GM Justin Hollander said yesterday that Bryan Woo will not make his scheduled start against the Rockies tomorrow because of pectoral tightness.

Woo exited his most recent start against the Astros last Friday after throwing a couple of warmup pitches in the sixth inning. Hollander said Woo is doing well, but he won’t start tomorrow mostly because his routine has been broken up.

He added that there are no plans to put Woo on the injured list.

Seahawks News

Richard Sherman has received a deferred prosecution in his ongoing DUI case. ESPN reports that a King County District Court judge granted the request to the former Seahawks star cornerback yesterday.

That means his charge is suspended as long as he agrees to meet certain court requirements.

Sherman was charged with a DUI in June in connection to his arrest in February 2024, when he was pulled over for speeding and registered a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.

Speaking of the Seahawks, they’re gearing up for a big divisional matchup tomorrow. The Hawks are traveling south to face the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday Night Football.

The two teams own identical 2-1 records and a win would boost the Seahawks up to second place in the NFC West standings.

Seattle has dominated the series in recent years, winning seven straight since 2021. They’re coming off a blowout win over the Saints, while the Cardinals lost to the 49ers by just one point last Sunday. More bad news came for the Cards, when they learned starting running back James Conner will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury he suffered in the loss.

The Seahawks will look to keep up their momentum and win their third straight game. Tomorrow’s coverage begins at 3:00 and kickoff is at 5:15 on KPUG.

Local Sports News

A local high school is getting a major upgrade to their athletics field. The state Recreation and Conservation Office announced today that it’s awarding a $386,000 grant to the Nooksack Valley School District to convert its field from grass to artificial turf.

The change is expected to be made by the end of 2027.

The Zone’s Friday Night Lights show will be at Nooksack Valley next week for their first conference game against Mount Baker. But first, Allan Fee and the crew are traveling to Lynden High School this Friday for Anacortes vs. Lynden in a matchup of the top two 2A schools in the state.
