Northwest Sports Update: Lynden plays for pair of district titles, USA women’s hockey team beats Canada for gold, Garver back with M’s and more

HS Basketball News

The Squalicum girls kept their season alive in the district basketball tournament last night.

The Storm beat Anacortes 51-36 last night to earn 3rd place in the 2A district tourney and advance to the district crossover. There, they’ll host Selah at 3 pm on Saturday with a chance to clinch a spot in the state tournament, which would be their first appearance since 2010.

Meanwhile, the Ferndale girls had their season come to an end in a 90-69 loss to Shorecrest.

 

Coming up tonight, the Lynden Lions are playing for a pair of district championships.

First up, the Lynden girls will put their undefeated record on the line against Archbishop Murphy in a meeting between two of the top teams in the state. Tipoff is at 5:30 from Mount Vernon High School.

After that, the Lynden boys will take the court when they face Anacortes in the 2A district title game. The Seahawks are looking for revenge after the Lions beat them earlier this month.

Coverage begins at 7:15 and tipoff is at 7:30 on KPUG with Jason Upton and Rick Todd on the call.

Both Lynden squads have already clinched spots in the state tournament.

Winter Olympics News

The United States’ women’s hockey team is world champions.

Team USA edged Canada in 2-1 in overtime this afternoon to win Olympic gold.

Seattle Torrent star Hilary Knight scored the game-tying goal to send it to OT, where Megan Keller scored the golden goal for the win. It marked the final Olympic game for Knight, who became the US’s all-time leader in Olympics goals and points, men’s or women’s.

She helped earn Team USA’s 27th gold of the Olympics, which moved them past Italy into 2nd place at the Winter Games. They still sit 7 medals behind Norway for first.

The men’s hockey team will look to hold up their end as they face Slovakia tomorrow in the semifinals. They could have a chance to also face their archrivals in the gold medal game, as Canada is playing Finland in the other semifinals matchup.

The puck drops for Team USA’s game at 12:10 pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Alysa Liu delivered the US its first women’s figure skating Olympic gold medal in 24 years earlier today after performing a near-flawless free skate.

Mariners News

A familiar face is back with the Mariners.

ESPN reports that the club signed veteran Mitch Garver to a minor league contract.

Garver, who turned 35 last month, played each of his last two seasons in Seattle. He initially joined to be their designated hitter, but struggled at the plate and became their primary backup catcher.

Garver now joins Andrew Knizner and Jhonny Pereda in the competition to back up MVP-finalist Cal Raleigh.
