Three more high school basketball teams from Whatcom County have bit the dust as the district tournament continues.

The Sehome boys and girls and Squalicum boys all had their seasons come to an end in the consolation bracket last night.

The Storm boys lost to Lakewood 55-41 before the Mariners boys fell to Burlington-Edison 62-60.

Lakewood and Burlington will now meet in the 3rd place game for a chance to go to the district crossover, where the winner will play for a spot in the state tournament.

Meanwhile, the Sehome girls lost to Anacortes 55-50.

Still, it capped off a resurgent season for both Sehome teams, where they each doubled their win totals from the previous year.

The Squalicum girls were the lone team to emerge victorious from last night’s elimination games.

The Storm topped Lakewood 56-42 to advance to the district 3rd place game, where they’ll face Anacortes tomorrow with a spot in the district crossover on the line.

If Squalicum wins its next two games, it will earn its first state tournament appearance since 2010.

 

Coming up tonight, two district championship games are taking place at Lynden High School.

First up, the Lynden Christian girls are playing Nooksack Valley in the 1A district title game at 5:40.

The winner will book a spot at state, while the loser will play either Meridian or Blaine in a winner-to-state game on Saturday.

After that, the Lynden Christian and Nooksack Valley boys will take the court at 7:15 to decide their own 1A district championship.

It’s the same stakes as the girls, with the winner heading to Yakima and the loser playing a winner-to-state game against either Meridian or Mount Baker on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Lummi Nation boys and girls are each tipping off their tri-district tournaments tonight.

First up, the Blackhawks girls are hosting Concrete at 5:30 in the quarterfinals.

After that, the boys are hosting Northwest Yeshiva at 7.

Seahawks News

One of the Seahawks’ top priorities this offseason may take a bit longer to lock down. 

ESPN reports that the team is unlikely to use either a franchise or transition tag on running back Kenneth Walker III. 

The news doesn’t come as a major surprise, as Seattle has only used the franchise tag twice in 16 seasons under general manager John Schneider.

Walker is one of several free agents that the Seahawks want to re-sign this offseason, in addition to a potential extension for Offensive Player of the Year Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

MLB News

Another curveball just got thrown into baseball’s looming lockout.

ESPN reports that Tony Clark has resigned as executive director of the MLB Players Association.

The announcement came in the wake of two investigations: a federal probe into the MLBPA’s finances and other alleged misconduct, and a separate internal investigation by the union into an inappropriate relationship with Clark’s sister-in-law.

Players met earlier today to discuss Clark’s departure and potential candidates to replace him.

It comes as the league is at odds with the players’ association over the owners’ call for a salary cap that could prompt a lockout when the current CBA expires on Dec. 1.

According to ESPN, the process for naming Clark’s replacement is unclear.

Winter Olympics News

The United States is continuing its push for Olympic supremacy with five days left in the Winter Games.

The US earned two silver medals today, one in freestyle skiing and another in speedskating, to boost their total to 21.

They’re still in third place, trailing first-place Norway by 10 medals.

The US men’s hockey team is back in action tomorrow when it faces Sweden in the quarterfinals at 12:10 tomorrow afternoon.

They still have yet to lose this Olympics and could be on a crash-course with top-seeded Canada in the gold medal game.

College Basketball News

The latest college basketball rankings are out as we approach the home stretch of the regular season.

In men’s basketball, Michigan moved up to No. 1 in the AP’s poll for the first time in 13 years.

The Wolverines were followed by Houston, Duke and Arizona, while Gonzaga moved up one spot to No. 11.

In women’s play, undefeated UConn stayed put at No. 1, followed by UCLA, South Carolina and Texas.

Washington dropped out of the rankings after previously holding the No. 22 spot.
