Northwest Sports Update: Cal narrowly beat for MVP, Seahawks-Rams, state tournament updates and more

Mariners News

Cal Raleigh fell just short in the razor tight voting for American League MVP last night.

The Mariners star finished four votes behind Aaron Judge for the award. Judge won for the third time in four years, despite Raleigh setting a major league record for catchers with 60 home runs.

Shohei Ohtani won a bit more decisively in the National League, unanimously earning the fourth MVP of his career.

Seahawks News

The Seahawks are up for their toughest test of the season this weekend. They’re on the road against the Los Angeles Rams in a matchup of two teams tied for first place in the NFC West.

Both teams have won their last four games, with the Seahawks riding a 10 game road win streak into the matchup. It’ll also be a duel between MVP candidates, with Seattle’s Sam Darnold and LA’s Matthew Stafford among the short list of midseason favorites for the award.

The winner of Sunday’s game will own sole possession of first place in the division.

Huskies/Cougs News

The Huskies and Cougs are also taking the field this weekend as they hit the final stretch of their seasons.

Washington will look to shake off last week’s upset loss to Wisconsin when they host Purdue at 4:00 tomorrow. After that, Washington State is hosting Louisiana Tech at 7.

Meanwhile, the Huskies and Cougs are facing off in men’s college basketball tonight. UW is traveling to Pullman to face Wazzu, which is competing in the West Coast Conference this season.

Kraken News

The Kraken’s offense impressed in their comeback win last night.

Jordan Eberle scored twice in the third period to lead Seattle to a 5-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets. The Kraken entered the third period trailing by a score, but Eeli Tolvanen tied the game and Eberle hit the go-ahead goal minutes later before adding an insurance score to secure the win.

It helped Seattle avoid a three-game skid, as they’ll look to keep it up tomorrow against the San Jose Sharks in the last leg of their homestand.

WWU Vikings News

Western’s women’s soccer team is headed back to the conference championship for the 14th straight season. The Vikings edged Seattle Pacific 2-1 yesterday in a double overtime thriller.

Senior Morgan Manalili scored early before assisting Reese Walker on her game-winning header to help the Viks advance from the semifinals.

They’re now unbeaten in their last 17 games going into tomorrow’s match against Simon Fraser in the GNAC Championship finale. That game will get underway at 2:30 from Simon Fraser University. 

HS Volleyball News

The state volleyball tournament got underway earlier today.

Lynden Christian and Meridian each earned sweeps in their opening-round matchups to move on to the 1A quarterfinals, which will take place at 4:15 pm.

Sehome and Lynden each moved on to the 2A quarterfinals, where they’ll look to book a semifinal spot at 8 pm.

Meanwhile, Ferndale is taking on Snohomish in the 3A district consolation bracket tomorrow with a ticket to state on the line.

HS Soccer News

In state tournament soccer, the Sehome girls are hosting Hockinson at Civic Field at 1:00 tomorrow.

Lynden Christian is facing Bear Creek at Monroe High School at 2.

HS Football News

The state football tournament is also kicking off tonight. Four Whatcom County schools will be in action this weekend, while Mount Baker and Lynden Christian take the week off with their first-round byes.

First up in Class 3A, 16th-seeded Ferndale will look to play spoiler to #1-seeded O’Dea at Renton Memorial Stadium. The Golden Eagles will look for more late-season magic after pulling off a massive upset over Cheney last week that earned them a spot at state.

Coverage begins at 4:40 and kickoff is at 5:00 on KPUG with Jim Bring and Randy Farmer on the call.

Coming up tomorrow, 6th-seeded Lynden starts off the slate by hosting 11th-seeded West Valley of Spokane at Ferndale High School. Coverage begins at 1:40 and kickoff is at 2:00 on KPUG with Jim Bring and the coach Dan Kaemingk on the call.

After that, 7th-seeded Nooksack Valley is hosting 10th-seeded Life Christian Academy at Civic Field. Coverage begins at 4:40 and kickoff is at 5:00 with Randy Farmer and Rick Todd on the call.

Meanwhile, 9th-seeded Sehome is traveling across the state to face 8th-seeded Othello in a rematch of last year’s first round matchup.

The Mariners will look for the same result after narrowly beating the Huskies in a tight game last season to move on.They’ll kick off at 4:00.
