Northwest Sports Update: Cal awaits MVP announcement, WWU soccer kicks off postseason, Sehome girls soccer hit state quarterfinals and more

A Mariner fan-favorite is hoping to hear his name called tonight during Major League Baseball’s MVP awards show.

Cal Raleigh is one of three finalists for American League MVP, along with the Yankees’ Aaron Judge and the Guardians’ Jose Ramirez. Judge is the odds-on favorite to win, which would be his third time in four seasons.

In the National League, Shohei Ohtani, Kyle Schwarber and Juan Soto are all in consideration for NL MVP. The award show begins at 4 pm.

It comes after Detroit Tigers ace and former Seattle U star Tarik Skubal won the AL Cy Young award yesterday, while 23-year-old Pittsburgh Pirates prodigy Paul Skenes was the unanimous winner in the NL in just the second season of his career.

Kraken News

The Kraken are looking to avoid dropping their third straight match tonight. They’re hosting the Winnipeg Jets in the second leg of their three-game homestand.

Seattle’s coming off back-to-back losses, including a tight shootout loss to the Blue Jackets on Tuesday. They’ve played the most overtime games in the NHL season.

The Jets are coming off a win up North over the Canucks that snapped their three-game skid.

Pac-12 News

The rebuilding Pac-12 has found a new TV partner.

USA Sports announced today that it’s partnering with the conference to televise their games starting next year and lasting through 2031. The network will televise 22 football games, 50 men’s basketball games and up to 10 women’s basketball games.

In addition to USA Sports, Pac-12 football games will also be carried on The CW, CBS Sports Network and CBS.

The Pac-12 will be back to nine teams for the 2026-27 season, including its two current members Washington State and Oregon State.

WWU Vikings News

Western soccer kicked off its postseason today.

The Viking men had their season end in a 5-3 loss to Seattle Pacific earlier today in the first round of the GNAC Championships. The Western women are playing SPU, with the winner moving on to the conference tournament title game.

Prep Sports News

Sehome’s girls soccer team beat Ellensburg 5-1 last night to advance to the 2A state quarterfinals. There, the 3rd-seeded Mariners will host 6th-seeded Hockinson at Civic Field at 1 pm on Saturday.

Over in prep volleyball, Ferndale is playing Everett in the 3A district semifinals tonight with a ticket to the state tournament on the line. They’ll start at 7 pm from Stanwood High School.
