OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – New data is out on unemployment throughout the state and within our county.

The state Employment Security Dept released their jobs report for September 2025.

Washington saw the job market shrink between the months of August and September this year, with the greatest losses in the non-farm and service-providing jobs.

The unemployment average rate throughout the state was at 4.5%, down by only 0.1% from August and up slightly more than this time last year.

Whatcom County saw better numbers than the state average, with 3.9% unemployment rate for this September, hovering at the same as last year’s.

That unemployment rate in the county is down compared to August this year however, dropping from 4.5% in the span of a month.

Skagit County also saw their numbers reflecting Whatcom’s trend, with year-over-year for the month of September at about 4%, dropping after a marginal rise in August.
