WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Time is running out to drop off your flood-damaged items for free in Whatcom County.

The county-sponsored debris drop-off site at Stremler Yard in Everson will be closed for the holidays on Wednesday, Dec. 24 and Thursday, Dec. 25 before closing permanently on Jan. 1.

RDS Disposal and Republic Services are each offering free disposal in Ferndale at no cost to those impacted by the flood, except on Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The state has also opened a new pop-up Disaster Assistance Center at Nooksack Valley Middle School.

Residents who need support after the flood can get in-person help from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23 and again from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27.

Meanwhile, a pair of key deadlines are coming up to receive disaster aid from the state.

The last day to apply for cash assistance is Jan. 15 and the deadline to file a claim for any groceries purchased with food stamps that were lost in the flooding is Jan. 8.

The American Red Cross Shelter hosted by the Nooksack Indian Tribe is now closed. Anyone who needs food or shelter can still call the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767.
