BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Bellingham man is in custody after being accused of sexually assaulting someone in a tent.

Police Lt. Claudia Murphy says that the victim accepted an offer from the suspect to stay inside the tent near W Stuart Road Saturday, Aug. 8.

They told investigators that the suspect, identified as a 41-year-old man, later became enraged after they tried to retrieve something from their backpack.

The suspect physically restrained and assaulted the victim, but they weren’t able to escape until the next morning.

Officers arrested the suspect later that morning and the victim was taken to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic/sexual violence, call 800-656-HOPE (4673) to reach the National Sexual Assault Hotline.
