NORTH CASCADES NATIONAL PARK, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A wildfire burning in east Whatcom County has grown in size.

The Luna Fire is currently estimated at about seven acres in the North Cascades National Park. It was discovered southwest of Luna Camp last week, but is believed to have sparked from a lightning storm that hit the area on June 24.

The fire is burning in a rock scree along Big Beaver Trail in steep, rough and remote terrain.

Firefighters are continuing suppression efforts with help from three helicopters.

Two other minor blazes in the park, the Rigby and Little Beaver fires, were both fully contained over the weekend.

Elsewhere, the Chelan Hills Fire in Douglas County has burned nearly 10,000 acres on the shore of the Columbia River. Wildfire monitoring site Watchduty reports the fire is at 50% containment as of Tuesday night, July 7.

One person was killed in that fire when their truck slid off the road and was consumed by the blaze. Additionally, KIRO reports over 100 homes and buildings have burned in the wildfire that sparked on July 4.

Adam Smith, Dianna Hawryluk and Emma Toscani have contributed to this sotry.
