One of the Mariners’ top prospects is making his major league debut.
21-year-old Lazaro Montes started tonight’s game against the Red Sox as Seattle’s designated hitter. The M’s offense will look to get an injection from the lefty bat, who hit 38 home runs with 96 RBI in the minors this season.
He’s ranked as the No. 5 prospect in Seattle’s farm system by MLB Pipeline.
Montes’s debut comes at arguably the Mariners’ lowest point of the season. They fumbled a late lead and got walked off by the Red Sox in extras last night to lose their fifth-straight game and drop to six games out of first place in the AL West.
They’ve now fallen 10 games under .500 for the first time since June 2022.

One of professional sports’ biggest moguls is adding to his collection.
ESPN reports the Los Angeles Angeles are being sold to LA Rams owner Stan Kroenke for a record valuation of $4 billion. It surpasses the previous MLB record for a sale of $3.9 billion set by the Padres’ new owner earlier this year.
The sale is expected to close early next year, pending MLB approval.
In addition to the Rams, Kroenke also owns the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids and the Premier League’s Arsenal F.C. among other professional sports teams.

The Storm are getting some relief in the midst of their nightmare season.
The WNBA is taking a roughly two week break for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. Seattle has four players who were selected for the tournament, including France’s Dominique Malonga, Spain’s Awa Fam and Australia’s Ezi Magbegor and Jade Melbourne.
The World Cup tips off in Germany on Friday and will continue through Sept. 13. The Storm will return to play their final four games of the regular season, starting on Sept. 17 against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces.

A pair of Western athletes are being recognized for their standout performances in the first week of the season.
Vikings junior forward and Ferndale alum Audrey Holdridge was selected as GNAC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. She scored a pair of goals in their season-opening win over Hawai’i Hilo last week for her first career brace.
Meanwhile, senior middle Emily Vossenkuhl earned GNAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. She recorded the second-most total blocks in a match in WWU and GNAC history in last Friday’s five-set win over Chaminade.
It comes as the Vikings’ men’s and women’s cross country teams were each picked to finish first in the GNAC preseason coaches poll. Their seasons start on Sept. 26.
