BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Some stronger rules have been instituted against an aquatic invasive species.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has classified golden mussels as prohibited throughout Washington.

The invasive species have been on conservation watchlists before, though the mussel has not become established in the state according to the department.

Golden mussels pose a similar risk to Washington’s waters as the currently invasive quagga and zebra mussels.

The emergency rule making was spurred on after Oregon Fish and Wildlife encountered a golden mussel-fouled boat in southern Oregon last week.

Under the new classification, it is illegal to purchase, transport, retain or introduce to local water bodies the mussel.

Golden mussels will also be a species that inspection stations will look for when checking boats before entering local water bodies.
