WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The atmospheric river will continue to bring rainfall to the region through Friday, but not the amount that was previously forecast.

The National Weather Service has issued flood watches for both Whatcom and Skagit Counties.

That means river flooding is possible but not imminent.

Current forecasts show the Nooksack River could reach minor flood stage in Ferndale on Thursday afternoon. The City of Sumas says they’re anticipating that water levels may reach action stage by late Friday.

Other points along the Nooksack are expected to remain below flood stage levels.

The Skagit River is forecast to crest at Concrete Friday night, but about 2 feet lower than earlier predictions. It’ll crest in Mount Vernon Saturday morning.

Despite the more positive predictions, those in low-lying flood-prone areas should be prepared for potential flooding.

NWS is also warning of increased avalanche and landslide risk in the Cascades.
