OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Hunters and anglers will soon have to leave the cash at home when buying their licenses.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced it will no longer accept cash for license product purchases starting next month.

Its offices will only accept card or check payments beginning on June 11.

The transition is being made in response to the state’s newly-passed law phasing out the penny, which is no longer being produced.

Fish and Wildlife said it would cost tens of thousands of dollars to update its point-of-sale system to accommodate rounding sales to the nearest nickel.

It comes after the department decided to shift from paper to mobile licensing due to a global shortage of petroleum-based paper. People can still print licensing documents on standard printer paper at home or at a license dealer location.
