SEATTLE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington wants to help lower income residents get behind the wheel of electric vehicles (EV).

The state will launch a rebate program in August that will offer $5,000 toward the purchase of a new EV or $2500 toward a used one. The program will also offer incentives for EV leases.

The Seattle Times reports it will be available to those earning 300% or less of the federal poverty level. That works out to about $45,000 per year for a single person or $93,000 for a family of four.

The state rebate can be mated with a $7,500 federal incentive that does come with some made-in-America strings attached.

The state’s general fund has $50 million set aside to fund the program.
