WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Two people were hospitalized following a crash in an I-5 construction zone.

WSP said that the driver, identified as an 83-year-old man, was heading north near Lake Samish around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 24.

He didn’t merge properly as he approached the construction zone at the N Lake Samish exit, crashing into a barrier and rolling his vehicle.

The driver was taken to Harborview Medical Center, while his 57-year-old passenger was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center.

WSP said that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash. The northbound lanes of I-5 were not fully reopened until after 11:30 p.m. that night.
