BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Work is about to get underway on Bellingham’s newest park and a long-awaited cleanup project on the waterfront.

The city says it’s chosen IMCO General Construction as the contractor that’s tasked with cleaning up two contaminated industrial sites at the south end of Cornwall Avenue.

An investigation into the site found roughly 295,000 cubic yards of municipal waste and 94,000 cubic yards of wood waste.

The three-year project is expected to begin as soon as this fall, possibly in November.

My Bellingham Now previously reported that about half of the $19 million project is being paid through state grants, while the city and the Port of Bellingham will cover the other half.

The city is also nearing the first phase of construction for the new Salish Landing Park, which will be located at the area currently known as Cornwall Beach Park after the cleanup is complete.

That work will establish a small parking lot, trails and a boat launch among other features for the future park.
