BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A section of forest on Galbraith Mountain has been slated for logging next year.

The Bellingham City Council voted Monday to approve negotiations for logging an 80-acre section of the North Beaver Creek Preserve.

Public Works reports that the area, a former logging site, has become too dense and is preventing ecological growth.

Mayor Kim Lund recently had a chance to visit the site:

“As you stand there, you can hear diminished birdsong, there are no ferns growing on the ground. It just looks very different than a structurally complex and ecologically active forest should be looking,” Lund said during the council’s evening meeting.

It’s estimated that there are roughly 250 trees per acre, of which the city plans to fell about 150 per acre.

Janicki Logging and Construction Co. will complete the work by hauling timber through nearby properties that they own.

Details on future timber sales will be determined through the negotiation process.

Logging work on the site is scheduled to begin next year.
