BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Residents in two Bellingham neighborhoods can look forward to hearing less noise from trains passing through.

The City of Bellingham said it is almost done with implementing the safety improvements that are needed to designate the Fairhaven area as a quiet zone. Once approved by the Federal Railway Administration, horn noise would be reduced from trains at every public crossing.

All crossings have to be upgraded to quiet zone standards in order to qualify.

Three of the five crossing projects in Fairhaven are finished, with one currently under construction. The city is currently working to establish a quiet zone in the downtown waterfront area.

Along with this project, the city also recently finished upgrades on the F Street crossing, leaving three remaining crossings that need to get the required safety improvements in that part of Bellingham.

The timeline for those to be finished is still unknown as the city finds funding for the repairs.
