WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Stage 1 burn ban began on Monday, June 15, in unincorporated areas of Whatcom and Skagit counties.

Land-clearing and yard debris burning are no longer allowed in an effort to prevent wildfires.

Recreational and cooking fires are still permitted if they meet a certain set of requirements.

Fire pits can’t be larger than 3 feet by 3 feet in Whatcom County and have to be at least 16 inches high. They must also be at least 25 feet away from homes, structures and dry vegetation.

In Skagit County, enclosures have to be at least 13 inches tall and no wider than 3 feet. Recreational and cooking fires are limited to 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high.

Liquid gas and charcoal barbecues are still allowed, but they have to be on a non-flammable surface.

The burn ban is expected to last through Sept. 15 in Whatcom County and until further notice in Skagit County.
